Candlelight Tours Guided tours take place inside the historic fort 30 minutes after sunset. Saturday’s during Living History Weekend Garrisons, the first weekend of every month. Sea Turtle Watch Sea Turtle nesting season begins May 1st through Oct. 31. Our dedicated volunteers get to the park at 6am, load the supplies and head out to search for sea turtle tracks. Once they see tracks, they determine if its a nest or a false crawl. The turtle patrol then stakes off the nest and monitors it for about 62 days then start looking for the signs of a hatching. They wait 3 days to excavate the nest. Sometimes a hatchling may get stuck in the nest and the volunteers will release that same morning. Our conservation efforts are working. 25 years ago we only had 4 nest on Fort Clinch beach. In 2016 it was a record breaking year with 57 nest on our 3 miles of beach. It is hard work but very rewarding. Kid's Fishing Clinic Every year, Fort Clinch State Park host the Kids Fishing Clinic to teach lessons on knot tying, tackle, casting, fishing ethics, habitat. This is a free event and participants get to take home their own rod and reel combo provided by Fish Florida through their sailfish license plate funding. All funds for this program are donated by local sponsors. 2018 had around 150 children attend. In addition, organizers hope to teach fundamental saltwater fishing skills and provide participants a positive fishing experience. Participants will have the opportunity to practice their new skills and fish at the edge of the shoreline. |
